Ralph H. Batten, 77, of Upper Deerfield, NJ passed away October 25, 2024. He was born on July 12, 1947 in Bridgeton, NJ. Ralph graduated Bridgeton High School in 1965. He went on to graduate from Colorado School of Trades as a Gunsmith and then enlisted into the Navy as a Gunnersmate. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Borie DD-704 and the Charles S. Sperry DD- 697. After serving full time in the military, he then continued to serve the country in the reserves. In the reserves, he was the Weapons Officer for Battalion 21 and retired as the Chief Weapons Officer for the East Coast (Seabees) 7th Naval Construction Regiment in Newport, Rhode Island.
Ralph was hardworking and dedicated. He spent years working at Progresso, Wheaton’s Glass, Airwork, Durand, Cumberland Manor and retired from Southwood’s State Prison.
Ralph had many hobbies. His passion for Gunsmithing carried over form the Navy and his late father William Batten. He could always be found tinkering with a gun, watch or clock at his work bench. He loved yard sales, estate sales, and auctions. He loved to hunt and cherished his hunting trips with family and friends. His most cherished hobby was camping with his family and making sure everyone always had a homecooked meal. He was always willing to cook for any function and was known for his Critter Dinner mystery meat. He was also known for his love of music and would never pass up a chance to dance.
Ralph was predeceased by his father William H. Batten, mother Emma Mae Batten (Elwell), and brother William G. Batten. He is survived by his children Elizabeth O. Batten, Samantha A. Batten, Siobhan M. Palau, and William W. Batten. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
Ralph was proud of his family heritage and loved to share family stories and history. His children find peace in knowing that our father’s legacy lives on through lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the memories that will be cherished forever.
Funeral services will be held at 12 NOON on Saturday, November 2nd, at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp., NJ. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 AM to 12 NOON prior to the services. Interment with Military Honors will take place following the services at Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery in Hopewell Twp.
