Johnstown – John R. Coughlin passed away on March 3, 2023. John “Jack” was born in Troy, NY on February 15, 1925, son of the late Richard Coughlin and Josephine Brown.
Jack graduated from Catholic Central High School, Troy, NY in 1943 and then voluntarily joined the United States Navy. He served as Seabee Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class during Pacific World War II. Upon honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Troy to attend R.P.I. University and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering. Jack began his career at General Telephone in Johnstown, NY. He held many engineering positions until he retired from Continental Telephone in 1985 as Network Design Director. After retirement, Jack became a Consultant to many small telephone companies in the NY area.
In 1954 Jack married Christine Connolly and they settled in Johnstown with their three children. Jack truly enjoyed life. From traveling each year to Florida, to swimming, golfing, playing cards, spending time with family, he was always involved. He also strived to stay current on the newest in electronics even after he lost his eye sight to macular degeneration. As a resident of Johnstown, Jack served on many committees; Johnstown Hospital, Johnstown Hospital Foundation, Johnstown Charter Commission, Master Plan Committee and City Planning. He was also a life long member of Loyal Order of Moose, Johnstown.
Jack is survived by son, Perry Coughlin (wife, Deborah); daughter,
Kellie Hastedt (husband, Bruce); grandchildren, Bryan, Rebecca, Elyse, Matthew; great-grandchildren, Abby, Ryan, Sebastian, Seth, Emmaline, Jasmine, William, Jaclyn, Jewel, Zachary. Jack was predeceased by wife, Christine; daughter, Dale; brother,
Richard.
In the words of his children, Perry & Kellie, to know our Father was to love him. He was a one of a kind person to whomever he came in contact with during his very long life. He was loved by family, friends and well respected in his professional life. He was always there when you needed him and will be missed everyday.
