Lloyd R. Madison passed away quietly in his sleep at his home in Abilene, Texas on Sunday, May 8, 2022. He was 91 years old.
Lloyd was born in Del Rio, Texas in 1930 to Russell C. Madison and Frances Marie (Bain) Madison. He grew up in Del Rio, attended Del Rio schools and spent his free time in and around the San Felipe Creek with his friends, the Speer boys.
He joined the US Navy SeaBees in 1948. After training in San Diego, he saw service in the Pacific, working on construction projects in Guam and the building of Clark airbase in the Philippine Islands.
He returned to Del Rio after his honorable discharge. There he met Phillip Claudyne Moore, a teacher from Abilene, through a mutual friend. They were married in Abilene May 23, 1954. They had two daughters, Rebecca and Jeredith (Jere). They were members of Grace (United) Methodist Church. Claudyne passed away in 1978.
He began working for the Texas Highway Department (TXDOT) in the early 1960s as a diesel mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He worked on many area road projects, including sections of the new Interstate 20 between Fort Worth and Abilene. He retired from TXDOT in the mid 1980s.
He continued his military service in the SeaBee Reserves out of Abilene. His unit, US NMCB 22, was activated and sent to Vietnam. He received his Chief Petty Officer ranking during this time. When he returned home, he continued his service, becoming Commander of the Ninth Reserve Naval Construction Regiment from 1978-1989, when he retired.
He married Mary Frances (Shuman) Warren on July 29, 1993 in Abilene. Together, they took many trips across North America, Europe and Asia. They loved taking cruises to new places and were active Volksmarchers. They completed walks in all fifty states as well as Canada and Europe.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca and wife, Claudyne and his parents, Russell and Frances Madison. He is survived by his daughter, Jeredith (Jere); wife, Mary Frances; step children Buddy Warren and family of Baird, Tina Warren and family of Orlando, FL and Scott Warren and family of Hamby.
Visitation will be Thursday evening, May 12th from 6-8 PM at North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange St., Abilene. Graveside services will be Friday May 13th, 11 AM at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene, 7457 W. Lake road In lieu of flowers, send donations to the charity or non profit of your choice.
