Edward Joseph Lyons, Sr. passed away on June 11, 2023, at 11:49 AM after extended complications with dementia at the age of 85 surrounded by family and loved ones.
Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 14, 1937. He moved to Toms River, NJ until relocating to Dublin, GA in 1987.
He was a member of the United States Air Force from 1957-1960, serving in Newfoundland. He also retired from the Navy Reserve as a heavy equipment operator (MSNB14) as part of the Seabees at NAS Jax.
Ed also retired from Clayton Block. He worked for Gold Kist, Griffin Industries, and Telfair County Schools as a long-term substitute teacher and special education paraprofessional at the high school.
An active member of the community, Ed was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Dublin. He was in the Knights of Columbus, serving as The Grand Knight. He also belonged to the Teamsters Local 469. He was a community coach in Telfair County in football and baseball. He was also the football and baseball coach at Telfair County Middle School.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Edward John and Mary Agnes Lyons, his sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Behyl and Rosemary Lyons, and first wife, Deanne Lyons and daughter Maureen Lyons.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Mary Lou McPhee Lyons of Dublin, GA, his children Kathleen (Tony) Casazza of West Deptford, NJ, Edward (Kelli) Lyons Jr of Waxhaw, NC, Thomas (Anna) Lyons of Waxhaw, NC, Anne (Rufus) Hay of Whiting, NJ, Patrick (Rebecca) Lyons of Sharpsburg, GA, Erin (Larry) Swinney of Sharpsburg, GA, Tim (Stacey) Lyons of Manchester, NJ, and Megan (Drew) Rogers of Milledgeville, GA, cousin, Letitia (Letty) Giraud of St. Petersburg, FL, three brothers-in-law, Michael (Karen) McPhee of Charlotte, NC, Ric (Shirley) McPhee of Lawrenceville, GA and John (Bev) McPhee of Riverdale, CA.
Ed had 26 grandchildren. 12 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
Ed loved his family above all, he also loved the Yankees, Jets, Giants, Notre Dame, his dogs, Belle and Murphy, and his cats, Charlie, Angel, and Snowball.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Dublin Memorial Gardens.
A Rosary will be held Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 6:00 P.M. in the Chan Stanley Memorial Chapel of Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation to follow until 8:00 P.M.
