Lawrence Lovell Surber, Jr., 81, passed away on March 30, 2025. Born on July 1, 1943,
in Charleston, WV, Larry graduated from Marietta High School in 1961 before attending
Southern Technical Institute, where he earned 2 associate degrees.

In 1966, Larry answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy
through the Instant Petty Officer Program. He entered service with the rate of EAD2 and was
assigned to Mobile Construction Battalion 62 (Seabees) in Gulfport, MS. In 1967, his unit was
deployed to Vietnam, where he honorably served his country. After completing his tour, he
returned stateside and was discharged from service.

After his military service, Larry returned to The Southern Technical Institute to further his
education, earning a bachelor’s degree. Throughout his career, he dedicated his expertise to
various industries, beginning with Georgia Power Company. Later, he explored real estate sales
before ultimately returning to the construction industry, where he contributed to numerous
architectural firms overseeing major projects until his ultimate retirement.

Larry is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Susan McGary and his second wife Sarah.
He is survived by his cherished granddaughter, Kaleigh McGary, his first wife Alice.
Larry will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his service to his country, and the love
he had for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, resilience, and craftsmanship that
will not be forgotten.

A service honoring Larry’s life will be conducted at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in
Marietta on Tuesday, April 15, at 11:00 AM, with visitation beginning an hour earlier. A
graveside service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veteran’s charity of choice in his
memory.
