PO3/EA3
Donald K. Archer Jr. of Jeffersonville, Indiana passed away peacefully on Monday, February 27th.
Don was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois to Donald K. Sr. and Hazel M. Archer on October 2, 1944. He graduated class of 1962 from Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio. Afterwards, Don enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam with the “Seabees” Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 58.
Don began university at The Ohio State University and remained a lifelong Buckeye, graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He went on to complete higher degrees at the University of Louisville in engineering management and business administration. In 1987, Don was appointed to a faculty position at the J.B Speed School of Engineering, where he taught for 24 years, authoring a textbook, and pioneering partnerships with universities in Germany and Panama, where he often lectured.
Don enjoyed golf, gardening, ballet, and baseball. He lettered on the golf team at Ohio State University and was a longtime member of Jeffersonville’s Elk Run Golf Club. He volunteered with the Louisville Ballet and performed in more than twenty-five productions, appearing as a toy soldier in the Nutcracker and as a pirate in Peter Pan. A season ticket holder at Cardinal Stadium and Louisville Slugger Field for nearly thirty years, on summer evenings Don could often be found a few rows behind home plate taking in a ball game.
Following a distinguished career in industrial and nuclear utility design, Don decided to go it alone. In 2005, he established Lindon Engineering Services, Inc. and led the company for 18 years, eventually expanding into commercial real estate. During the tornado outbreak of March 2–3, 2012, Don paused daily operations to coordinate disaster relief efforts throughout Southern Indiana. Don’s engineering expertise and passion for civic engagement led him to be called on as an expert witness in civil proceedings.
Don is survived by his wife Linda, sister Leanne K. Eisler (late David), California City, California; brothers Bradford Archer (Christina) of Denver, Colorado; Jeffrey Archer (Nancy) of Levittown, New York; daughter Jessie Archer of Clarksville, Indiana, nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald K. Archer Sr. and Hazel M. Archer; and sister, Joella DeCarpio (Tom) of Columbia, South Carolina.
