Dr. Samuel Randolph Scheen, Jr. passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on September 3, 2025. He had recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
Born in Louisville, KY on August 24, 1925, Dr. Scheen graduated from St. Xavier High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 to join the World War II war effort. He trained in Hawaii and was deployed to Iwo Jima, where he was one of the first troops to storm the beaches at Mount Suribachi as part of the Seabees 133rd Construction Battalion.
Following the war, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville and then graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He interned at the University of Cincinnati and trained at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN, specializing in dermatology.
Dr. Scheen then returned to Louisville and went into private practice as a dermatologist. He was a beloved physician and contributed much time to improving the medical community. He was a member of the Kentucky Nursing Advisory Board. He served as chief of staff at Baptist Hospital East and was very involved in the Kentucky Medical Association, holding many titles, including president. He served on the admissions board of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and was instrumental in forming the Kentucky Medical Insurance Company, which helped make malpractice coverage for physicians more affordable. Dr Scheen also lectured at the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and the University of Cincinnati.
He was passionate about education and donated funds to build the S. Randolph Scheen Family Foundation Conference and Education Center at Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
In 1949, Dr. Scheen married the love of his life, Elizabeth Wilson of Louisville. They were married for 61 years, until her passing in 2010.
Dr. Scheen is survived by five children, Randy (Carolyn); Anne DeMarco (Tom); Kevin; Ellen Corbett (Pat); and Patrick (Kathy); eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held on Friday, September 5 at St. Albert The Great Church, with a private burial afterwards at Cave Hill Cemetery.
