Dr. John James Woods Jr., of Town and Country, MO, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the age of 80.

John is survived by his wife Karen, his children John III (Jeanna), the late Amy, Michael (Karen Haynes), his brothers Terry and Michael, his two grandchildren Jacob and Conner, beloved brother-in-law, loving family and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret Barz.

John was the second son of June and John Woods who lived in Wisconsin. He attended the University of Notre Dame and was on the collegiate swimming team. After graduation from Marquette School of Medicine. John married Karen in 1971 and was married for 52 years. In June of 1972, John enlisted in the United States Navy, SeaBee Division. After his service in the military, John maintained a 30-year career as a General and Vascular Surgeon at Mercy Health Systems. John celebrated his retirement where he enjoyed volunteering with St. Louis County Parks and Urban Hikers walking group. John continued his love of swimming in retirement and always looked forward to tropical trips during the St. Louis winter and spending time with his bride. His passion of gardening and nature can be seen in many areas of St. Louis, including his house. John really knew how to make things grow! His patience, persistence, and hard work are truly admirable, and enjoyed by all. John’s green thumb and love of nature inspire us all to appreciate the beauty of the world around us. His gardens are full of life with his passion for nurturing plants and creating beauty.

Visitation will be held at the SCHRADER Funeral Home, 14960 Mancheser Road at Holloway, Ballwin, Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church of St. Louis, Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
