Lloyd S. Dunham, 98, a long-time resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY; passed away on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Taconic Rehabilitation and Nursing at Hopewell in Fishkill, NY with family by his side.
Born on February 24, 1927, Mr. Dunham was one of ten children born to the late Raymond and Anna Schoonmaker Dunham of Gardiner and New Paltz, NY.
He was a graduate of New Paltz Central High School. On February 13, 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class within the Navy Construction Battalion – “Seabees”. He was honorably discharged from active duty on June 27, 1946.
On October 31, 1948, Mr. Dunham married the love of his life, Pauline A. Dunham from Newburgh, NY establishing residence in Poughkeepsie, NY and enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage until her death on October 9, 2000.
Upon discharge from his service in the Navy, Mr. Dunham started an apprenticeship as a meat cutter with Grand Union continuing in the legacy of the Dunham family meat business which originated in his hometown of New Paltz, NY. He worked for the Grand Union Company for the next 43 years until his retirement in 1989 as Meat Department Manager at the Hopewell Junction, NY store. After his retirement, Mr. Dunham worked part-time as a meat cutter for Grand Union and Hannaford supermarkets for 28 years until he finally “retired” in 2017 at the age of 90. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Mr. Dunham’s faith in God, love and devotion to his family and friends, honesty, integrity, respectful nature, and incredible work ethic will be remembered by all who knew him. He was and always will be regarded as the perfect “gentleman”.
In addition to his son Mark (Donna) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, he is survived by his daughter-in-law Christine Dunham of Pocono Pines, PA and nine grandchildren: Juliet Dunham and her husband Joe Linaberry, of Pocono Pines, PA; David Dunham Jr. and his wife Jennifer Koch, of Bethlehem, PA; Timothy Dunham, of Pocono Pines, PA; Patrick Dunham and his wife Jillian, of Pocono Lake, PA; Daniel Dunham and his wife Kylie Donnelly, of Wilkes-Barre, PA; Matthew Dunham, of Pocono Summit, PA; Christine Dunham of Pocono Pines, PA; Christopher Dunham and his wife Claire of Crofton, MD; and Andrea Andrijevich and her husband Ramsey of Mission Viejo, CA. He will be lovingly remembered by his nineteen great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved son David of Pocono, Pines, PA; five brothers: Harry of Ghent, NY; Walter of West Islip, NY; Lester of Highland, NY; Clyde of New Paltz, NY; and Roy of Poughkeepsie, NY; and four sisters: Margaret Decker of Walden, NY; Lena Markel of Kerhonkson, NY; Isabelle Hasbrouck of New Paltz, NY; and Laura Ellsworth of Kingston, NY.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wm. G. Miller and Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Interment will follow at Saint Peter’s Cemetery, 171 Salt Point Turnpike, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
