DOVER – James William Donophan, Sr. passed away, Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Kent General Hospital.
Mr. Donophan was born December 11, 1936 in Willow Grove, Delaware to the late William Donophan and Georgia Larrimore Donophan.
He served honorably for 20 years as a Navy Seabee and went on to a second career as a heavy equipment mechanic at Dover Air Force Base. Mr. Donophan became a mentor to many young men and women serving in the military and was affectionately known as “Mr. D”. After retiring from the civil service position he enjoyed his garden and flowers, meeting friends for breakfast several days a week. He made many new friends while going to Spence’s on Tuesday’s and Friday’s.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by siblings, Dorothy, Milton, Violet, Ernest, Joyce and Clarence.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol Welch Donophan of Dover; children, James, Jr., (Sharon), Jennifer Bennett, Darrell Donophan (Marie), Amy Walter (Dennis); grandchildren, Anthony, Olena, Caitlin, Emily, Kelsey, Christina, Pearl, Skyler, Delilah and Logan; great grandchildren, Sapphire, Chloe and Levy; siblings, Angilee Hobbs, Charles Donophan and Joan Donophan.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 12, 2021 at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966.
