At the age of 19, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees, the Naval Construction Force. He served his country with honor for 24 years and retired in 2002 as a Chief Petty Officer. His duty stations included NMCB-62, the Navy Museum in Washington DC, NAVCHAPGRU in Williamsburg, NCTC Gulfport, NMCB-74, CBU-423, NAS Sigonella, and NAS Brunswick. He also earned the Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist Insignia and Master Training Specialist. While stationed in Sicily, Larry graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland.

After his retirement, to Richmond, VA in 2002, Larry and Susan started what became a very successful kitchen and bath remodeling company due to their attention to detail, demand for perfection, and his extraordinary ability to connect with their customers who quickly became friends. Larry and Susan enjoyed working together for the next 22 years, before retiring in September 2024.

Larry is survived by his wife Susan Cramer Twining; his children, Chad Twining, his wife Morgan, and their son Ashe, Abigail Twining (John David Shobe IV) and Mason Twining (Ally Sellers). Larry will forever be remembered for his intense love and pride for his family and country, larger than life presence, his practical jokes, sense of humor, and his ability to quickly make friends with people from all walks of life with simply a kind word or gesture. Becoming a grandfather filled him with great joy. Larry insisted on always having good food, good beer, homemade cappuccino, and real maple syrup. He loved to exercise, whether it was at the gym, the ski slopes, or on a bike. As a former New Englander, he closely followed the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. He was also a diehard Redskins fan.

Music was always a part of what he was doing, whether it was cooking, working, exercising, or hanging out by the pool, there was always a song he was singing. He loved the outdoors and took pride in the beautiful oasis he created in their backyard. Although Larry leaves a huge hole in our hearts, the special memories and joy he brought to all our lives will live on forever.

A service honoring Larry’s life will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 823 Cathedral Place in Richmond. Visitation with the family will be held from 1-2 p.m. at the church, with a funeral Mass immediately following. Burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
