Donnie M. Grey, 90, of Burgettstown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 14, 2022, in the home where he was born. He was born July 17, 1931, in Burgettstown, a son of the late Cecil N. and Frances Valjean Gardner Grey.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Alma Louise “Lou” Saffle Grey (1999); daughter, Valerie Ann Grey (1991); sisters, Patty Holt, Margie Knapp; brother, John Grey (Nellie, deceased); aunt, Betty Neeley (Frank, deceased); and companion, Diane Freshwater.

Donnie served his country as a Seabee in the United States Navy. He was a civic leader in the community; former deputy sheriff of Washington County; police chief of Hanover Township; charter member of Hanover Volunteer Fire Department; township supervisor; and a Burgettstown Area School Board member for 40 years.

He was an owner / operator and drove for Weir Cove trucking until his retirement in 1991. He was also a member of Fort Vance historical society; owner of Cedar Grove Plantation Bed & Breakfast in Natchez, Miss.; and served on the Hanover Township Sewer Board until his passing.

He attended Tucker United Methodist Church; and was a member of Richard Vaux Lodge No. 454 Free & Accepted Masons. Donnie was an avid collector.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Lanna Barkley (Rick); grandson, Janson Barkley (Jessica); granddaughter, Caraline Barkley (Jessie Scalise); friends, Lori and Elizabeth; brother, Richard Grey (Charleen); sisters, Barbara Libengood (Lee, deceased), Donna Gates (Mike), Sue Brown (Richard); and brother-in-law, Larry Knapp; along with many nieces and nephews; and his close “Twister” friends.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 19, in Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 380 Penco Road, Weirton, W.Va., where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, with Pastor Kenn Jacobs presiding. Burial will follow at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Florence, where military funeral honors will be provided by American Legion Post No. 10 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Tucker United Methodist Church, 641 Steubenville Pike, Burgettstown, PA 15021.
