Captain Sanford A. “Sandy” Glazer, DDS, EdD, of Potomac, Maryland, born in Lima, OH, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1961 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery and immediately joined the US Navy. Rising to the rank of Captain, Dr. Glazer attended Officer Candidate School in Newport RI before reporting to his first duty station at Naval Station San Diego. Captain Glazer was then assigned to Mobile Construction Battalion 10 of the SEABEES with stops in Okinawa, Philippines, Vietnam, and Alaska. During the Vietnam War, Captain Glazer served at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital where he treated many of the wounded returning from the Vietnam War. It was here he met his wife of 58 years Lt. Commander Cherry Kolter, a Navy Occupational Therapist. They have one son, Scott of North Potomac, who served in the fire, rescue and EMS service throughout the National Capitol area.

Captain Glazer then served on the USS Simon Lake as part of Submarine Squadron 14 in Holy Loch Scotland. Upon returning to the US, Captain Glazer held multiple duty stations including National Naval Medical Center (Now Walter Reed Hospital), Bureau of Medical and Surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and the Fleet Hospital Project. While serving his country, Captain Glazer received both a Masters and Doctor of Education from George Washington University.

Captain Glazer retired from active duty serving 20 years in the Navy and continued his public service as a volunteer forensic odontologist in DMORT Region III of the National Disaster Medical System for FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security including deployments to Hurricane Katrina and other disasters and consulted with the FBI’s National Crime Information Center.

Dr. Glazer had a brilliant mind and used his talents as the inventor of SSM technology, holding 5 U.S. Patents for treating medical waste and founded Red Bag Solutions, a company specializing in the development of infectious waste disposal equipment. His work encompassed ongoing technical development and regulatory affairs in the medical waste disposal industry.

He also founded a company that provides quality assurance reviews for major insurance companies throughout the United States. In addition, he taught at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Forensic Sciences.

A graduate of Lima Central High School class of 1954, he regularly planned and attended reunions for his class including their 80th birthday party and 62nd reunion in 2016, 60th in 2014, and in 2010 was inducted into the Lima City Schools Distinguished Hall of Fame.

Dr. Glazer is survived by his loving wife Cherry; son Scott, daughter-in-law Jennifer; grandsons Macallister and Nathaniel; sister Rona Lee (Cookie) Cohen, and many congregants of temple Beth Ami which he was a longtime member. Full military honors and service at Arlington Memorial Cemetery are Monday, December 1, 2025, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
