Robert was the son of Dagmar Torp and Christian Smith, both born in Copenhagen Denmark.
Robert was united in marriage in East Lansing, Michigan to Geraldine Anna Pierce on December 20, 1941, at the time of his marriage, his residency was Annapolis, Maryland.
He was the brother of Ingeborg, born in 1912 and Arne, born in 1921
