Captain
Duncan “Dunc” S. Hughes passed away unexpectedly on March 21, 2024, in Guilderland, NY. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, he went on to receive two degrees from his beloved University of Michigan, in Aerospace and Civil Engineering. Following his graduation, Dunc was sent to Vietnam as a member of the United States Naval Mobile Construction Battalion MCB121, known as the Seabees. In 1968, he returned home and married Jill C. Slingerland, and had his daughter Kerry 5 years later. Dunc’s career in the USN Civil Engineer Corps took the family to many different locations all around the world. A four-year tour in Japan was a favorite.
Following his retirement as a USN Captain after 26 years, Dunc started working as a site representative on SUNY campuses for the State University Construction Fund. He was eventually hired by the Fund and rose to Regional Director. Of note was his project on the Upstate Hospital Vertical Expansion, which included floors for the Children’s Hospital known as the Treehouse. He really enjoyed mentoring staff throughout his career.
After retirement from the Fund, Dunc loved travelling, especially driving long distance trips across the United States to see family and friends. Seeing the countryside rolling by was his favorite thing to do. Dunc will be remembered for his sense of humor, rooting for the U of M Wolverines, explaining the difference between concrete and cement, and bringing home all the family cats. He will be deeply missed.
Dunc is preceded in death by his parents, Byron (Polly) Hughes and Frances Hughes; his siblings, Sandra, Scott (Gwendolyn), and David (Beth). He is survived by his daughter, Kerry; his former wife, Jill; sisters Pamela and Margot (Jay); his brother David’s fiancée, Joyce Lemmer; and numerous nephews, nieces, family, and friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local animal shelter or the charity of your choice.
