Final Salute

David Nelson Hull, 84, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away on December 2 , 2023 at Centura Longmont United Hospital.

David was born in Syracuse, New York and later moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where he spent most of his upbringing. David attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. On the day David graduated from the Naval Academy, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ruthie, in the Naval Academy chapel in the traditional arch of swords. David and Ruthie enjoyed 60 amazing years of a loving and selfless marriage that was the centerpiece of their lives. Although Dave had a busy and full career, he knew nothing more important than the happiness of his loving spouse.

David went on to earn a Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Michigan and enjoyed 27 years serving his country as a Naval Officer. David retired from the Navy on June 30, 1989 as a Captain in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. His naval career had provided opportunities to visit and live in many different places. David was fortunately able to be accompanied by his family for most of his assignment including Ann Arbor, Taiwan, the Philippines, San Diego, Port Hueneme, Point Mugu, Kings Bay and Washington DC. David and Ruthie enjoyed traveling and visited many other countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Australia, Polynesia, Switzerland, Namibia and Botswana.

Upon retirement from the Navy, David and Ruthie played for four years in Brian Head, Utah, and then began a second career in the Florida panhandle. David began his third career, creating MMS
Corporation, consultants in business process analysis and reengineering, serving large distributed enterprises. A decade later Dave hung it up, choosing Las Cruces, New Mexico, for their final
retirement. In 2020, David and Ruthie moved to Colorado to be closer to their daughter and her family.

David was so much more than can be captured in an obituary. He loved life, he loved the people he encountered, the trips he took, the adventures he had, he had a smile that lit up a room and you knew how happy he was by how his eyes would sparkle when he would talk. Nothing can capture everything about him, but this quote by Nishan Panwar expresses his sentiments “We are all stories in the end, remembered by the adventures we had, the achievements we made and the people we loved. So make sure your story is a good one.” David had an amazing story!
David is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth (McLain); their daughter, Coralie and her husband, Jess; their grandsons Ethan and Bennett; and his sisters: Coralie Werking and Julie Ray and her husband Roger.
