Captain
Arthur S. Poole, Jr., 84, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away February 4, 2021.
Born in Washington D.C. in 1936, Mr. Poole grew up in Roanoke, VA, graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1958 with a B.S. in Engineering and an M.S. from George Washington University in 1973. He joined the US Navy in 1959, serving 29 years and retiring as a Captain in the Civil Engineer Corps. Upon retirement he worked for Sverdrup Corporation for 7 years in the Virginia Beach and Langley offices as a office/project manager and civil design engineer.
During his Navy career he served, among other places, in Antarctica, Spain, Vietnam and Puerto Rico. His assignments included duty as Commanding Officer, Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and Public Works Officer. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Joint Service Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Antarctic Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with 5 campaign stars. He greatly loved his wife and family, old friends from the Navy, good food and good wine, golf and life in general. He built some darn good antique reproductions, played lousy guitar, painted OK and was a great cook. He always had a home improvement project of some kind underway.
He is survived by his wife, Karin L. Poole of 57 years; daughter, Ellen Katherine Poole of Tempe, AZ; son, Thomas Poole and daughter-in-law, Lori Poole; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Sarah, Zachary and Michael, all of Chantilly, Virginia.
