Captain
Andrew Anthony Kannegieser, CAPTAIN United States Navy Seabees and Civil Engineering Corps, 97 years of age, died October 20, 2022. He was born to the late Andrew Anthony Kannegieser and Cora Margaret Hoover on August 17, 1925 in Wilmington, Delaware.
He was preceded in death in 2001 by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Louise Kannegieser of Gulfport, MS, and his sisters Catherine VanHorn and Margaret Stauffer. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Kannegieser; his daughter, Andrea Kannegieser; his son, John Kannegieser (Belinda); grandchildren, Allison Kannegieser-Taylor (Devin), Ashley Kannegieser (Dago), and Hobie John Kannegieser (Abbey); great-grandchildren, Jazmyne and Georgia; brother, Charles Kannegieser; and sister, Elizabeth King.
He attended the Milton Hershey School, Hershey PA, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, NY, and upon completion sailed ports around the world including: England, Murmansk Russia, Okinawa Japan, Italy, Guam, Hawaii and was involved in the World War II Normandy landing in France. In 1949 he enlisted with the U.S. Navy Seabees for thirty three years and eleven months. He retired in 1987 after advancing through the enlisted ranks achieving the rank of CAPTAIN. During his service he received the Legion of Merit (2 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Civic Action Medal with Battle “E” (2 awards), Vietnam Service Medals with 2 bronze stars and numerous other area and achievement awards.
Andrew attended the Progress Church of God. He was a member of the West Shore Pennsylvania Elks, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a Life Member of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America.
Services to be held at Arlington National Cemetery will be announced.
