Robert “Bob” Wilson Bruce, 84, a devoted family man and honorable veteran, passed away peacefully in Portland, Texas on January 20, 2025, following a brief illness. Born on December 8, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, Bob was a man of very few words whose actions spoke volume about his character and commitment to those he loved.
Bob’s legacy of service began in 1959 when he bravely joined the United States Navy. Over the course of 20 years, he dedicated himself to serving his country, ultimately achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer before being honorably discharged in 1979.
While stationed at NAS Chase Field in Beeville, he met and married Minerva Vela on March 29, 1969.
This period of his life was marked not only by the pride he felt in protecting his nation as a Seabee but also by the strong values he instilled in his family.
Known for his love of woodworking, Bob spent countless hours perfecting his craft. His family will fondly remember his hands skillfully shaping wood into pieces that not only served purpose but also captured his spirit. Fishing was another cherished pastime, offering him moments of serenity and bonding with his loved ones. Bob delighted in family time, often sharing his passion for watching FOX News and exploring pawn shops, ventures that brought joy and laughter to his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Bruce and Doris Ingles; his daughter, Janet Lynn Bruce; his sister, Judy; and his son-in-law, Samuel Aguirre.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Minerva “Minnie” Bruce, who was a steadfast partner throughout their years together. He leaves behind a legacy through his daughter, Carol Sue Aguirre; as well as his grandsons, Jacob Valencia, Matthew (Toni) Valencia Sr. and Jeremiah and Landis Ferrell; his great-grandchildren, Matthew Valencia Jr. and Ryhan Valencia. He is further survived by his brother, Ernest (Helen) Harrison; and his sister, Kay (Greg) Smith.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 26, at Oak Park Memorial Funeral Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7 o’clock led by Deacon Roger Rosenbaum.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, January 27, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Isaias Estepa officiating.
A burial with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bob’s grandchildren, Jacob Valencia, Matthew Valencia Sr., Matthew Valencia Jr., Ryhan Valencia, Jeremiah Ferrell, Landis Ferrell and Joshua Gonzales.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Cook, Bobby Martinez and Pablo Martinez.
The family wishes to thank Harbor Hospice of Portland for their care during Bob’s final days.
Bob will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family and country, and his passion for the simple joys of life. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
