Of Ocala, FL., formerly of Weston, MA., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, September 7th, 2024 at West Marion Hospital, FL. after a period of declining health at the age of 77.
Born on May 2, 1947, in Waltham, MA.; beloved son of the late Elizabeth T. Benotti (Weston, MA.), Ron was raised in Weston, MA., where he resided with his wife and children for over 50 years before retiring to Ocala, FL.
After attending Weston High School Ron enlisted in the military at age 19 and served honorably in the United States Navy Seabees. Before his deployment to the Vietnam War in March 1967, he married the love of his life, Lorraine T. Castellano in September 1966. He served in the Vietnam War and was issued the following awards for his combat service: Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal FMF/Combat Operation with two Bronze Stars, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Meritorious Unit Citation. Ron was invited with his fellow veterans for his Honor Flight, and recently traveled to Washington DC together to remember the fallen, share stories of the past, and experience the gratitude and community of support all veterans deserve. He visited our nation’s memorials and was truly grateful to have this experience. It was the greatest honor of his life to serve his country as a US Navy Seabee.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and was appointed as a Police Officer in the Town of Weston. Ron served the Weston Police Department as a Patrol Officer, Court Prosecutor, and Detective for 30 years until his retirement in 2004. He was the first recipient in the department’s history to receive “Officer of the Year” in 1996. He was awarded “Recipient of Commendation” in 1995 by the Massachusetts House of Representatives for his exemplary work in apprehending a dangerous felon.
Ron was always lending a helping hand and contributing to his community. He was passionate about sports, classic cars, coin collecting, politics, and enjoyed traveling and cruising with his wife and friends making memories over the years in Italy, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and many of the US landmarks by driving cross country several times.
He was an immensely proud father of his three children, their spouses, his 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren who “Pappy” adored and cherished. His stellar character, and his core values of honesty, respect, truth, generosity and fidelity were what made Ron a great man, father, soldier, friend, husband, and officer. His solid family values of safety, ethics, teamwork and integrity have directly impacted those close to Ron and are a part of his legacy.
