Donald S. Neidig, age 88, of Evansville, IN passed away from a fall at his home November 8, 2023. Don was born July 17, 1935, in Evansville, IN to the late John R. and Irma (Bender) Neidig.
Don was a 1954 graduate of Reitz Memorial High School and remained an avid supporter throughout his life. While at Memorial, he played tennis for three years, with his team winning two city championships, and football his senior year. During his high school years, Don and his friends enjoyed riding their bikes or driving to the College Corner Drive-In. He later volunteered for the chain gang at Memorial football games for 27 years. Don entered the Navy US Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Seabees, during his junior year in high school. The Seabees are tasked with building infrastructure to support military operations and civic-focused projects. During the Korean War, he served two years of active duty and eight years in the active reserve with the Seabees as a 2nd Class Builder Petty Officer.
From 1960-2010, Don was involved in building 352 new homes and improving housing in and around Evansville and Newburgh. He was an active member of the community serving in various capacities. Don was a member of the Mayor’s Brownfield Committee, Jacobsville Neighborhood Association, Hope Housing Inc., and North Side Revitalization Committee, and served on the Mayor’s Citizen Advisory Committee. He was also a member and past president of the North Side Kiwanis Club – Kiwanis International and received the George F. Hixson Fellowship Award. Don was a member of AmeriCorps Vista, where he was the award winner for the state of Indiana. He was a licensed real estate broker, insurance agent, and residential appraiser (SRA). Don was co-owner of the North Main Annex restaurant and managed residential and commercial rental properties through R&D Investments. He was a longtime parishioner at Good Shepherd Catholic Church and participated in the choir for many years. In his later years, Don enjoyed working around the house completing home construction projects, playing clabber, and getting together with his Memorial classmates.
Don is survived by his wife, JoAnn (Hillenbrand); daughter, Caren, of Fishers, IN; son, Marc, of Three Rivers, CA; and brothers, Roger (Barbara) Neidig of Mt. Vernon, IN and Jim (Jodi) Neidig of Evansville; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2023 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville with a Memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 N. Stockwell Rd., Evansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Father Zach Etienne officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery where the Retired Veteran’s Club will conduct graveside services.
