David R. Hippen
Born: December 31, 1939 in Dixon, IL
Died: November 26, 2025 in Sterling, IL
STERLING – David Ralph Hippen passed away peacefully at his home after a short illness, surrounded by the love and comfort of his wife, children, and grandchildren throughout his final days.
Born on December 31, 1939, to Eilert M. Hippen and Trientje J. Oelrichs, David was raised on the family farm and attended Prairieville Grade School. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1957.
Following graduation, David proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1960 as a BU2 Seabee builder. His time in the Seabees sparked his lifelong passion for building and concrete work-a passion that shaped his life and career.
On January 20, 1963, David was united in marriage to the love of his life, Wanda Kay Shafer. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and strong family values. They were blessed with three children: Ryan (Trisha) Hippen, Jodi Hippen, and Kristi (Phil) Jones.
After his military service, David worked for Bob Propheter Construction before venturing out to start his own concrete business, Hippen Construction, from which he retired in 2004. His craftsmanship and dedication can still be seen in the structures he created-especially the homes he lovingly built for his children.
David embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid golfer for many years, sharing countless rounds with his close-knit foursome. In his later years, he became a passionate camper and woodworker. Some of his fondest memories were made around the campfire, where he was known for his legendary beer can chicken and his warm, easygoing spirit.
Above all, David was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. He cherished every moment spent with them, whether sharing stories, offering advice, or raising a heartfelt “wellness” toast as visitors departed-his signature reminder of love, connection, and good health.
David is survived by his wife, Wanda; one son, Ryan (Trisha) of Rock Falls, IL; two daughters,
Jodi of Georgetown, IN and Kristi (Phil) of Ellettsville, IN; seven grandchildren, Josh (Danielle), Jarred, Sean (Ashley), Trevin (Taylor), Trace (Katlyn), Caden, and Cora; and seven great grandchildren, Case, Kaiser, Graysen, Kessley, RaeLynn, Leighton, and Wyndham. He is also survived by two brothers, Ailt and Jack, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sister, Doris Steward; and sisters Amanda Mitchell, Florence Bailey, and Shirl Magnuson.
David’s legacy lives on in the family he adored, the homes he built, and the countless lives he touched with his generous heart. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visitation will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at McDonald Funeral Home, Rock Falls. Funeral service will follow at 11:00am. Burial will conclude at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling.
