Virgel Earl Parker, age 75, of Dixon, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born in Waynesville on March 4, 1948, son of the late Clarence Allen and Rosie Fern (Murry) Parker. On March 7, 1971, Virgel was united in marriage to Janet French, who survives at their home.
Virgel graduated from Dixon High School. Following graduation, Virgel enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1966, serving on the Grasp ARS24 (Amphibious Rescue Ship) until 1967. During that time, they towed barges from Guam to Vietnam and did routine diving operations along the coast. He later served in the Seabees building military bases along the river in the wetlands from 1968 until his discharge from active duty on November 7, 1969. Virgel joined the reserves in 1975, honorably serving until his retirement on September 30, 1993.
Virgel had a strong work ethic and founded Parker Equipment in 1988, continuing operations until his recent health decline. He loved working at his shop where he took pleasure in visiting with his friends and serving the community. He was a faithful member of Dixon Assembly of God Church.
In addition to his loving wife, Janet Parker, he is also survived by two sons, Brad (Jenny) Parker and Steven (Stacie) Parker; 10 grandchildren, Mikey Parker, Lance Parker, Billie Dawn Wiegand, Hannah Conner, Zoe Hill, Cale Parker, Clayton Parker, Isaac Parker, Katelyn Hausman, and Sydney Baremore; six great-grandchildren, Ady, Oliver, Lennox, Sophia, Emmalyn, and Elliana; two brothers, Bobbie (Nancy) Parker and Roy (Kyong) Parker; two sisters, Virginia Blanchard and Doris (Bill) Howser; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jimmy Parker and Richard Parker, and brother-in-law, Larry Blanchard.
Service will be held at 10 a.m., with a visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., on Monday, January 8, at Dixon Assembly of God Church. Interment with military honors will be held in Dixon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., on Sunday, January 7, at First Assembly of God Church in Dixon.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Dixon Assembly of God Church Camp Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia.
