Louis M. Calabrese Jr, 89, of Mapleton Maine passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from duodenal cancer. He was born December 23, 1933 in Queens New York, the son of Louis Sr and Mildred (Marino) Calabrese. Married 68 years to his beloved wife Louise (Cardone) Calabrese, together they relocated from Hauppauge, New York to build their Harvest Home in Mapleton where they lived for more than 20 years.
Proudly serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Northampton CLC-1 cruiser from 1951 to 1954, Louis further dedicated more than 17 years of service as a Seabee assigned to Reserve Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 13.
As a master carpenter and among many projects, Lou’s specialty was with case making, constructing customized cases for long-term storage, transportation, and presentation of sophisticated trade show displays used across the country. Lou also worked with metals, and helped design and construct the entrance and some of the interior façade of Disney’s EPCOT Spaceship Earth.
As a caring and contributing member of the community, for many years Lou volunteered for the Bread of Life program, delivering fresh bread monthly to cancer patients on behalf of Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R). He also visited as a volunteer at Leisure Village of Presque Isle weekly to serve and interact with residents during their recreational activities.
Lou enjoyed many activities including golfing, surf casting, bowling, adventuring near and far to enjoy nature and the countryside, and spending quiet time on the porch and deck with his wife Louise, together reminiscing about their shared experiences and events. Above all, Lou loved his family and friends with all his heart.
Lou is survived by his beloved wife Louise, sister Constance, brother Robert, daughters Nancy and Laura, son-in-law Nick, daughter-in-law Fe, grandchildren Nick, Brianne, Kaitlin, Ryan, Alexa, Sofia, and great-grandson Knox. Lou is predeceased by his son Michael Louis Calabrese of Mapleton Maine, who passed away on November 8, 2022 of pancreatic cancer.
Services will be held at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery later this year. Arrangements are in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
