LCDR Antonio “Tony” Carlos Marks D.D.S.

Lieutenant Commander

Date of passing 08/18/2024

Antonio “Tony” Carlos Marks, D.D.S., age 94, of Tiverton, RI, and Key Largo, FL, passed away peacefully at home on August 18 after a short illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Constance (Brouillette) Marks, to whom he was married for 72 years.

Tony was born in Cortico Da Serra Portugal, to the late Adelaide and Carlos Marks. Raised in Pawtucket, he graduated from West High School and went on to earn a B.S. from Providence College. He studied Bacteriology at the University of Connecticut and earned his D.D.S. from St. Louis University Dental School. After dental school, Tony served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy with the mobile SEABEE unit stationed in Guam in the Marianas Islands. During his service, he attained the rank of Lt. Commander. After leaving the Navy in 1958, Tony returned to Rhode Island to establish his dental practice in Tiverton where he and Connie resided for over sixty years.

Tony was deeply committed to his community. Alongside running a successful dental practice, he served on Tiverton’s Budget Committee, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club, and served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Newport. He was also a devoted parishioner at St. Christopher’s Church in Tiverton, where his faith and sense of community were deeply rooted.

For over 50 years, Tony and Connie were members of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida. Tony held this community close to his heart, serving on the Chapel Board and as a former president of the Health & Fitness Club. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the Card Sound Golf Club at Ocean Reef, where he cherished many friendships and fond memories. His grandchildren affectionately called him the “Mayor of Ocean Reef.”

An avid golfer throughout his life, Tony enjoyed competing in tournaments and was a former member of the New Bedford Country Club, Newport Country Club, and the Acoaxet Club. He also loved playing tennis, reading, and, in their earlier years, he and Connie loved to dance, traveling throughout New England to visit many of the region’s ballrooms.

Tony is survived by five children: Nancy Smith of Bristol, Philip Marks and his wife Christina of Tiverton, Paula Marks of Bristol, John Marks and his wife Kelly of Tiverton, and Joan Marks Skane and her husband Edward of Mashpee, MA. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Christopher, William, Benjamin, Amanda, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Emily, Zachary, and McCory, and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Constance, who were lovingly named after their great-grandparents. Tony was predeceased by his sister, Irene Marks Furtado of Pawtucket, and leaves many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for October 12, 2024 at 11:00 am, at Connie & Tony’s beloved home “Rivers Edge”, 55 Sunset View Drive, Tiverton, RI. Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, Fall River. Burial will be private.

The family ask that donations in Tony’s name should be made to: The Fund for Providence College – Financial Aid in honor of Antonio Marks, class of 51′, 1 Cunningham Square, Providence, RI 02918 or online at; https://giving.providence.edu/
